In mid-October, Nordecon AS delivered to the customer, Abakhan Fabrics Eesti AS, a block of buildings at the corner of Rüütli and Gildi streets in Tartu’s Old Town, and today the block will be opened festively. The total cost of the restoration and reconstruction work of the commercial buildings amounted to EUR 2.5 million exclusive of VAT.

“Local people will certainly be delighted with yet another nicely renovated historical building in their old town; it now has more functions than before – in addition to Abakhan’s fabrics store and new restaurants, the owner has also designed around twenty guest apartments there,” said Erkki Suurorg, member of the Management Board of Nordecon AS. “For the builder, however, this was quite a puzzle as the construction process was very challenging due to the requirements set for buildings under heritage conservation, the lack of space in the old town and also the bad condition of two buildings. We handled these challenges successfully and in time by adapting a modern commercial and residential environment to the setting originating in the 19th century."

Abakhan Fabrics’s block of buildings consists of three buildings: the building at 11 Rüütli Street, the transverse building at 11 Rüütli Street and the building at 7 Gildi Street. The three-level and four-level buildings surrounding a more private courtyard accommodate Abakhan Fabrics's stores, storages, offices and rental spaces. These are occupied for instance by a beer cellar and a restaurant.

Overall, the construction work covered around 3000 square metres. The work started last October and lasted for almost a year.
