Nordecon Betoon builds Estonia’s largest grain terminal in Sõmeru rural municipality

The opening ceremony of the Kevili Farmers Cooperative’s grain terminal constructed by Nordecon Betoon OÜ, a subsidiary of the Nordecon Group will take place today. The total cost of the design and construction work of Estonia’s largest grain terminal, which is situated in Roodevälja village, Sõmeru, Lääne-Virumaa County, amounted to EUR 8 million.

“The Kevili grain terminal is an example of a unique construction project in this sphere, as the general construction work was executed in line with the models and requirements of a Danish-based equipment supplier, which made the whole building process tense and pressing,” said Mait Rõõmusaar, CEO of Nordecon Betoon OÜ. “Relying on our proven experience in the construction of agricultural facilities, our skilful team and constantly up-dated know-how, we did fairly well. The new terminal has already demonstrated that it is operational and the contractor should be satisfied with the outcome.”

The construction of the grain terminal began last October and was completed this September. However, the terminal started to accept grain from farmers already in mid-August.

Mait Rõõmussaar says that the customer deliberately chose a site for the location of the terminal close to a railway connection and a port and at the same time in the middle of Estonia. The terminal receives, dries, stores and delivers grain. For drying the grain, 12 large grain tanks were built, each with the carrying capacity of 3,300 tons and six smaller tanks with the carrying capacity of 500 tons.

Grain processing equipment and conveyers are situated in an elevator tower standing at 37 metres and a separate building has been built for receiving and uploading the grain. Nordecon also constructed the office/weighing building for the terminal. The building accommodates a world-class lab, where samples are taken from incoming and outgoing grain in order to determine its quality class. Samples are analysed in a split second and this enables large quantities of grain to be received and delivered. The weighbridge is also situated in this building.

Nordecon Betoon is an Estonian company that focuses on the design and construction of concrete structures with general contracting. It forms part of the Nordecon Group and employs around 160 people.
